Fellini is also present in the co-star Paolo Villaggio, to whom he relegates the fear of the “dreadful illness, old age”, the feeling of unreality (the world does not exist, it’s an imitation, the perfect sham, a colossal scheme), the fear deriving from feeling persecuted by the phantoms of death.

But, above all, Fellini is naturally present in the film through his directing style, with many quotations within his work.

His presence is also felt in the various grand and absolutely irresistible metaphorical concepts which fill many of his films with thrilling appearances (Rex’s steamship in the night of Amarcord, the passenger rhinoceros in E la nave va, the alarming spherical demolition machine in Prova d’orchestra).
